Galileo Galilei did not discover the telescope but was the earliest to use it methodically to monitor space matter and verification his discovery. His book, Sidereus nuncius or The Starry Messenger was first published in 1610 and made him famous. In it he reported on his observations of the Moon, Jupiter and the Milky Way.

In 1592 he obtained the chair of mathematics at Padua, and begins work on the inclined plane and the pendulum. By 1598, Galileo believed in the truth of the Copernican theory, as he wrote to Kepler. Around 1604, he began working on astronomy in order to lecture on the new star that had appeared that year.
